This red coral has been set in this silver mount, with a solid silver back.
Coral was long thought to be a powerful talisman that could stop bleeding and gives protection from evil spirits, in many countries this tradition lives on, red coral necklaces are given to small children. Coral is one of the seven treasures in Buddhist scriptures and Tibetan Lamas use coral rosaries.
Fragile Coral trees were once brought to the surface by means of drag nets. But today, the harvesters use more environmentally sound methods: deep-sea divers collect the branches by hand, there by not damaging the source, and enabling the coral to re-grow.
