Runes are sculptured symbols derived from ancient Norse and Germanic alphabets. They have been used in northern Europe since the fourth century as a means of divination.
In simple terms the runes are cast onto a surface at the same time as asking a question. The resultant patterns of the runestones and symbols revealed can be read and interpreted. The main purpose of runestones is to interpret the path someone is currently taking and the likely outcome if the path is continued.
